Why is it bad news always comes in the middle of the night?

Tom & Barb Emmitt

Why is it bad news always comes in the middle of the night? Not that any time is a "good time" for such news. But a phone call at 2 am to let me know I've lost another family member has a way of disturbing my sleep for days at a time.

I was awakened by not one but three calls from a sister and a brother, both calling to let me know that our elder brother had lost his life in a roll-over accident while returning his truck to the Fed Ex lot in Traverse City, MI. (He and his wife were both in the truck - she survived; he didn't.)

Tom and I had our problems and disagreements. What pair of siblings doesn't? But we also had the one thing that kept us together - our love for each other and our mutual love for our siblings, cousins, neices, nephews and on down the family line.

RIP Tom Emmitt.

Why I'm An Activist for GLBT Rights

The following was published in two separate websites over the last couple of months:

As I sit here typing this, I’m re-watching the movie “Milk” and getting angry all over again about the stupidity of people like Anita Bryant. I remember watching her speeches 30+ years ago and wondering what the hell was wrong with her. I just couldn’t understand why Ms. Bryant and so many like her thought homosexuals were such a threat and even then using their religious beliefs to push their agenda on us all. I had known one homosexual man, a substitute teacher in high school. He never tried to ‘recruit’ any of the boys in class. He simply taught the subject of whichever class he was substituting in. (Though we all suspected, he was still closeted in 1969 when I first knew him. It was confirmed a few years later when his sister lived in the same apartment building as my husband and I.)

In all actuality, I pretty much ignored what was happening, though I simmered silently and I made a point of letting those around me know that I wouldn’t put up with anti-gay talk in my presence. I wouldn’t put up with any kind of judgment against anyone. One of the very first things I learned in church as a child was that we were not to judge our fellow human beings, but only to love them as God loves us all. Those who claim to be Christian are dishonoring Christ when they make judgments about the lives of others.

It wasn’t until late 1998, after the death of my husband, that I became even peripherally involved, after I joined AOL and began using their message boards. It was a story on AOL that led me to the boards discussing ‘gay issues’ and I have to say that some of the nonsense some people were posting made me physically ill. One of the issues I remember most clearly was the Supreme Court decision that voided laws against ‘sodomy’ in all fifty states. It clearly effected gay men more than anyone because those were the laws most police agencies used to persecute gay men. I pointed out to one fellow that, as the SC said, it was an invasion of privacy. I also pointed out that those same laws, because of the way they were written, could be used to arrest a man and wife who occasionally enjoyed anal or oral sex. (That was when I learned that the oral sex my late husband and I had enjoyed was illegal in our state!) I asked one man how it would make him feel if the cops burst in to his home while he was having sex with his wife. He said it couldn’t ever happen. Asked him what state he lived in, looked it up and told him that he COULD be arrested if he and his wife had oral sex because that was written into the law against ‘sodomy’ in his state. (Also provided him with a link where he could read it for himself.) I don’t think it changed his mind about homosexuality, but it sure made him pay more attention to exactly what laws were being passed in his state and in the country and the wording of them.

The ones who have always ticked me off are those who refuse to look at the evidence or refuse to believe said evidence. Those who still blame AIDS on homosexuality; those who make claims that somehow the gays in their cities (or even in remote cities) are somehow ‘to blame’ for their son or daughter (or nephew/niece or uncle/aunt or brother/sister) “becoming” gay. For some reason they just cannot accept that no one “becomes” gay; that a person either is or isn’t gay through no choice or action of their own or anyone else’s. Tell them that a gay man who lives to 100 as a virgin is still a gay man and they’ll argue with you. (Tell them I’ve not had sex since my husband died in 1998 and they’ll try to say I’m “no longer” a heterosexual!)

Another group that pisses me off are the ones who try to claim this is a “Christian nation”. Point out that there are only two mentions of religion in the Constitution and both of those are prohibitions, (Article VI states quite clearly that “….no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” and the 1st amendment which, by declaring freedom of religion, prohibits any national religion) and they’ll try to argue the way the date is recorded or jump to another document, claiming relevance of the wording of the Declaration of Independence or other documents as ’founding documents’. I’ve even read claims that the 1st Amendment means “freedom to choose any denomination of Christianity” but no other religion!

Then there are the ones who try to tell me I’m not Christian because my beliefs don’t march in lock-step with theirs. Ask them to define “Christian” and they’ll give you a litany of their beliefs, rather than stating the obvious: A Christian is one who believes in and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. Ask them what Jesus taught on just about any subject and they start quoting Old Testament verses, rather than the words in the Gospels that are His words and teachings. Point out His teaching that we are not to judge others and they’ll find verses from other books saying we are, completely misunderstanding that those books are talking about judging within their own church, not anyone and everyone.

In short, I guess my activism (mostly on-line in various forums, though I have occasionally confronted bigots in person) stems from my belief that no one has the right to tell another how to live, except in cases where actual harm can be caused. As I see no harm being caused by two gay men or two lesbians getting married or simply living their lives, or by a transsexual expressing his/her gender, I will not sit by and watch as others attempt to insult, degrade or persecute them. Just as I will not sit by and watch as anyone tries to insult, degrade or persecute another for not following any certain religion.

Was just reading, in one of my forums, a link to an article about a Canadian hospital that has refused to do an operation on an infant who has been in a vegetative state almost since he was born. The reasoning behind the refusal is that it would not save the child's life, but only prolong it for a few months.

What confused me were the arguments from some who thought this surgery should be done. They're calling it a 'ruling by a death panel'. (Because it's happening under the Canadian universal health plan.) I really do not understand why anyone would want to prolong the life of an infant who is going to die any way. I mean, he will never become an adult, will never even attend school or become a 'contributing member' of society. Because of the nature of the the condition with which he suffers, even in a vegetative state, he must be in some pain. If his condition is going to kill him within months any way, why prolong his pain?

I remember having very similar arguments with my mother-in-law throughout the summer of 1998, when my husband was dying from cancer. She couldn't seem to understand the suffering he was experiencing - pain caused by the cancer, further pain from the 'treatments' he had gotten early on. She honestly couldn't seem to understand that none of the treatments available would save his life and would in fact do no more than prolong his pain. Just as the parents in this case (and those arguing in their behalf) cannot seem to understand that their CHILD is in pain.

Understanding vs not understanding

Since when is it some sort of "crime against others" for me to not understand something?

I've been involved in a discussion on rape on city-data. The discussion was supposed to be about what kind of 'responsibility' a woman has to protect herself from rape. Smart things to so and not-so-smart things they should maybe not do.

Yesterday, I replied to a post about single girls dressing alluringly and heading to their neighborhood bars. All I stated was that I had never done so and that I really don't understand women who would do so. And I really don't understand why any woman would wear skimpy clothes and go into that kind of environment. Especially going alone.

Instead of explaining it, all of a sudden everyone there was attacking me, claiming that I was attacking other women!

Why?

I have had no credit cards since I filed bankruptcy in 2005. So why do I keep getting calls about my "current credit card account"? With my caller ID, I should be able to simply not bother picking up when such a call comes in, right? Wrong! They never come from the same state, much less the same number! Just got a call and the caller ID merely read the number and 'Seattle, Washington'. Having several cousins and other distant family members living in Washington, of course I'm going to pick up the phone, thinking it might be one of them trying to reach me for some reason. So, I answer the call and hear the start of this recorded message about my non-existant credit card account! The only person in this home who has a credit card also has his own phone number. (two separate numbers, in fact!)

One of these days, I'm going to listen to the entire spiel and see if I can figure out where they are originating from and just what the purpose behind them is. Then I'm going to see if there's anything I can do about getting them stopped! Once I have more info (like the company name and maybe the name of someone to contact) I just might contact the local TV station's 'help line' to see if they can at the least do a story about this nonsense.

Health Insurance

Okay, three years ago, Ford/UAW changed the retiree insurance and required a $10/month payment that I couldn't afford, which shunted me automatically to the 'catastrophic coverage'. That was bad enough. Now they've changed it again, this time with no warning at all. Beginning next month I will be getting a bill from BC/BS for $15/month! And I still have to pay the first $170 before the coverage even kicks in! And, should I have to fill a prescription, each will cost me $10-25, depending on whether there's a generic available or not. And the 'catastophic coverage' is no longer offered. So I have no choice at all unless I'm willing to have no health insurance.
Oh, if I were covered by another plan, I could waive this one. Whoopee! I can't afford this one! How the hell do they think I would have anything else?

Steven King books made into movies

Just wrote out a list because Ray was asking me what movies I was interested in. Really didn't realize that most of Kings books and several stories have been made into movies! I have four of them on DVD (The Stand, Secret Window, Hearts in Atlantis and Rose Red) and three on VHS (It, Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile). The list I gave Ray has The Shining (two versions), Salem's Lot, Carrie (two versions), Cujo, Dead Zone, Misery, Dolores Claiborn, Needful Things, Christine, Tommyknockers, Dark Half, Desperation, The Mist, Langoliers, Dreamcatcher and Thinner. Several of them were actually made for TV and I can't believe I forgot to add Storm Of the Century. (There are actually only three of them I haven't at least seen - Thinner, Dreamcatcher & The Mist.) If I had the money to spend, I would be on Ebay looking for all of those! And a few of Dean Koontz's books that have been made into movies/tv mini-series. Anyone ever hears of a tv mini series or even a series of movies from King's Dark Tower books, be sure to let me know!
Right now, instead of buying DVDs, I have to figure out if I can afford to get my water filters changed.
